review 1: I thought that, all in all, the book was O.K. Use of metaphors was really good, and I feel like a lot of teenagers can relate to situations in the book. However, many teenagers can feel get the wrong idea from some of the statements. The overall layout of the book is as follows: an introduction that explains the purpose of the book, people and situations that you need to watch out for in order to be successful, and an encouraging conclusion about the future. One of the instances that the author might be unintentionally giving the wrong idea to teenage readers is when he is portrays parents and other figures of authority as villains and "out to get you". I, being a teenager, have a little insight into their minds. If we have an excuse to not listen or behave badly, no matter... more how bizarre, we will take it and use it to our advantage. The author is accidentally arming teenagers with munitions to disobey their parents and act out as a result of his attempt to relate to us. Other than this and a couple other instances, I thought the book had some pretty good advice on being a teenager.
review 2: I first heard about this book because it was mentioned in conjunction with a youth gathering here. It does an excellent job of speaking to kids without being preachy, and it includes great life lessons. I can see many uses for this with teens; you could have many great discussions about different chapters. While the entire book relates a story, some chapters could stand alone. It's clever, witty, practical, and ethical. That combo is not easy to find!I checked out the reviews on amazon.com, and they were uniformly positive, and many of them were written by teens. I agree with the recommendation of grade 8 and up. Above all, students are told that they can be heroes, and are humorously told about the various "villains" out there, which ones to avoid, how to deal with others, etc. I can definitely think of some puppies, vampires, ghosts, and pirates in my life! Overall, it's a very uplifting, hopeful, yet wise book about life. I highly recommend it. less

Some things could have been better, but overall useful for its directed audience.
