review 1: I have a talent for reading books in a series out of order. I just finished this, reading it before the first ultimate collection. I really, really enjoyed it. There isn't much depth, but it is full of the wonderful snarkiness that I have long associated with Joss Whedon. I zipped through the collection in an evening, laughing at all the jokes (which I was unable to explain to Joel, as so many of them contained spoilers, but he read it the next evening and was also amused). Joss Whedon enjoys killing off characters, but in this case, it works because it is a superhero universe and people rarely stay dead. I would recommend it if you like the X-Men or Joss Whedon (or both).
review 2: I am so glad I didn't wait to read this! It was WAAAAYYY better than the first
... more volume. I liked teh first volume, but this one was waaaaaaaaay better. Aside from the story being really cool, just complex enough with just enough surprises, the artwork was incredible. The facial expressions were stunning. The art in this is bar far in the top 3 of all the graphic novels/comics I've ever read. And all of the characters really had a chance to shine, in ways that both stay trued to their characters but push the boundaries in good ways. It was so odd seeing Summers that long without the visor. and Kitty Pryde really got to shine, and she is by far my x-character.I also gotta say the best two stand out moments in the whole volume was when 1) Kitty came so hard while doing Colossus that she phased through the floor and 2) the next morning when they come down stairs together all tired and Wolverine is sitting at the kitchen table. There is three panels with him in the middle and each of them on either side of him. In the first one he has one eye brow raised at Kitty, then the next eye brow raised at Colossus, and then a panel where he says "'bout time". It was a perfect moment and his facial expressions were masterfully drawn. less
