review 1: I was kinda stunned to see so many lousy reviews for this book. I've enjoyed every Joy Fielding I've read in the past, and this one was no exception. Okay, so there's a certain amount of implausibility in the underlying premise. I mean, what woman in her right mind is gonna agree to drive her philandering soon-to-be ex-husband's girlfriend to a remote resort in the Andirondacks because HE "can't get away" to take her as planned? Oh yeah, said soon-to-be ex-wife also takes their pain-in-the-tush teenage daughter (So she and the "fiancee" can bond...) and her two best friends, who were SUPPOSED to be taking her to Manhatten to celebrate her fortieth birthday in style. See? A little weird.Still. I liked it. I liked the humorous aspect of this motley crew being thrown together... more and having to stay in the same suite, I liked the chilling undercurrent of gruesome murders taking place in the area, and I liked the inside look at the people committing them. What can I say? This was an entertaining book. Was it Fielding's best? No, but a not-her-best Fielding book is still pretty doggone good.
review 2: Is there anything worse than being forced to spend your weekend with your ex-husband’s fiancé? Yeah, as it turns out, there is, and the news that there is a serial killer on the loose in the area isn’t making things feel any better. In fact, they could be paying you a call next...I’ll never be intelligent enough to write a mystery. Kudos to those who can pull it off, and so while I have my definite opinions on how the book should have been written, take my opinions for the amateur nonsense they probably are.Without giving away the plot, Fielding tries, unsuccessfully in my opinion, to fool the reader into pinning the blame for the murders on red herrings, but the misdirection feels awkward. You know enough to understand something’s amiss. No, you can’t immediately put the pieces together, but you know enough to have the answer on the tip of your tongue. You just have to wonder if the answer could be so simple. It felt like Fielding’s purpose in writing this book was to reflect on the feelings of a betrayed spouse more than a true murder mystery. It felt preachy, and this in of itself would have been okay, except the overarching scenarios are unrealistic. Really? You’d allow yourself to be stuck in a car for five hours with your soon-to-be ex-husband’s fiancé in a car and then share a room and then go camping? Believe it or not, that’s not a spoiler, not if you have half a brain. The repetitive nature was also frustrating. If you give this book a try, you’ll see the duplicative nature of character descriptions, and again this too would be okay, except the description is mirrored by multiple characters in the cast. How is it possible for two people to see the same person in exactly the same way?Okay, I’d give it a 3.5 if I could because the plot idea is so bizarre as to be interesting. The writing is generally good. I would have liked to have seen a little more complication, but I can accept that perhaps this was written with an established target audience in mind. Maybe I just didn’t fit into it. less

Seems like a LMN movie plot - but not a bad read!
