review 1: Another grim offering from Ms. Oates-murderous schoolgirls, sinister twins, lunatic stepdaughters, mad surgeons et al! Once again populated by the unpleasant, the weak, the troubled and the downright nasty, my one criticism is that some of the stories-Hole in the Head being a classic-end like a Kafka novel-if not half way through a sentence, but at a point where you're just wondering-well how's he going to get away with this? Obviously ambiguity is part of the art of the short story-though I think maybe sometimes authors can't think of a satisfactory ending, so leave it to the reader to fashion their own!

... morend Other Nightmares is an unsettling read. From the title story's tale of a cruel, manipulative child's actions toward other children and adults to 'Fossil Figures' about a case of sibling rivalry that begins in the womb and ends somewhere inside a living hell to 'Helping Hands' wherein a grieving widow develops an unhealthy fascination with a wounded veteran, the stories in The Corn Maiden are meant to reflect the collection's nightmarish content. The problem is that there is only darkness in these stories. There is no light, no sense, no reason, no why or justification for anything that happens. The stories are hateful at best, with women and men at one another's throats (sometimes literally), plotting their own deaths or the deaths of others for simple, petty slights. There is no logical reason for any of the behaviors presented in the book, and this makes it difficult to care or want to continue reading.Finishing the book felt like a chore, and perhaps this reader finished due to some perverse hope that maybe there was a spark of light at the end of the tunnel. Instead, there is only more depravity, more desperation and wallowing in misery. Not recommended. less

Glad I gave this novel a chance. Entertaining in a slow-cooker kind of way.
