review 1: One of those books that someone passed to me to read on an airplane but that got put by the bedside table until I'd caught up on library reading. Sucked me in by the first page, had me sneaking peeks ahead when the suspense got to be too great and then kept me up late to finish. I love that in a book every once in a while. This was an excellent summer read, set as it during the heatwave weekend of a Labor Day in smallish town New Hampshire. I don't think I've read any of Maynard's novels or non-fiction before. From the minute that Frank, an escaped convict, approaches Henry at the Pricemart I was along for the ride. I was able to suspend andy disbelief over the plot because of the strength of the characters. Henry, in his 13 year-old awkwardness is a great companion and Ad... moreele's back story of loss made her actions and acceptance heartbreaking and sweet. Frank is the finest escaped convict ever, with his biscuits and soups. The end made me cry, because the novel had earned it.
review 2: Maybe it's because I'm not a romantic at heart (or a sensitive 13-year-old?), but I did not find the story enchanting or anything at all. Even reading the author's "about this book" epilogue explanation for why it's not as unrealistic as it may seem to some, I remained firmly unconvinced. However, unlike most people, I actually enjoyed the first half of the book because I actually thought something interesting was going to happen instead of the contrived, spot-this-from-a-million-miles-away sappy ending. less
