review 1: I've only read J.R. Rain's Jim Knighthorse series, so I wasn't sure what to expect here. Here we have another Jim, who's also a PI. There the similarities end. Jimmy Booker is dying, past dying actually, and he's brought one final case to work on before he goes into that bright light. Jimmy was a broken man long before his illness. A man who had given up on life long before the disease that's taking it from him. I won't say more than that, only that Jimmy is a tragic figure and you really need to be in the right mood to read this story. It's not endlessly angsty, but there is angst built into it because of Jimmy's condition, which the narrative never shies away from. Normally, the amount of repetition that's present in this book would make me grit my teeth or sigh in frust... moreration, but I really felt it was necessary here. There's a tendency for people to pretend death isn't real, isn't happening, even when it's right in front of our face, so being constantly reminded of Jimmy's condition and his current circumstances in his personal life and how he got there is needed, I think. I can totally see why it would bother others and put them off, though.I'm a little uncomfortable about his attitude about Numi, and there were some moments of unbelievability with Mary. Pretty much all her moments really, but in the end, the relationships worked for me on an emotional level. I do like the author's tone and style. An engaging book and tale, all around, and a quick read.
review 2: A Rainy Monday Morning Review for you ....."Not much could drag Jim Booker out of a peaceful, if lonely, retirement and back to late nights, crime scenes, and chases. Jim Booker is done with detective work and would just like to enjoy a cup of coffee on a sunny day. But when an old friend shows up with a case about an old flame, Booker can’t say no.What starts as a missing persons case soon delivers more than he bargained for, and when Booker’s own past offers clues, it’s clear that no one else can solve this mystery. But there’s a catch: Booker was given six months to live eight months ago."Silent Rain By J.R. Rain: Wow I don't even know how to start! This book had me from the get go. J.R. Rain takes us on a case with Retired Private Detective, Jimmy Booker and his AMAZING, Caring, and True to the end, Friend, Numi, Jimmy's little brother was murdered when he was a child, Jimmy blames himself , years later another murder of a dear friend , links the two murders together and brings our ailing with aids driven cancer, very sick friend Jimmy out of retirement to work on this case. This story is told in the first person and we get to know Jimmy's thoughts as he struggles minute by minute to stay alive to try and solve who did this to TWO people he loved. I also have to say the sentiment and caring of Jimmy by Numi and the very vivid descriptions of how someone with aids related cancer is treated , touched my heart in a BIG way! How EVERY minute of EVERYDAY you KNOW you are dying.. What would get YOU to find the strength to live on months more than you were given? Very emotional and well written book. Made me think a lot about my own mortality, and relationships and how very important they are. I give this book 5 final sunsets... VERY well done Mr. Rain! less

I liked this book. A little deep, but piqued my interest to read more books by this author.

Simple read. Interesting story with a sad ending, even though I knew it was coming.
