review 1: Well done for a first book, though sometimes felt like it could have been tightened up. I grew impatient with the sections based in the 1500s. The story could have been told without them. A few bits (eg, the chandelier scene) stretched my "willing suspension of disbelief," but overall I liked the dual murders and groups of characters set in both Trondheim, Norway and Richmond, VA. A funny nod to Nesbo's Harry Hole in one scene as if he were a real person was a nice tribute.
review 2: First published in 2011 in Norway, this novel will be released in the US February 11, 2014. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the ARC. Detective Odd Singsaker is just returning to duty after having a brain tumor the size of a golf ball removed. Gone is the erratic behaviors
... more and other danger signs that accompanied his tumor, but his ordeal has left him divorced and not quite steady on his feet. His first day back on the job puts him squarely in the middle of a gruesome murder investigation that he quickly discovers matches a murder only a few days older in the United States. As Odd investigates, he learns that both murders seem to revolve around a book that is over 500 years old and bound in human flesh, a book written by a grayfriar who may have been one of the most notorious serial killers of all time. I think the novel flowed well from the 1500s to present day, and traversed the ocean between Norway and the US very well. The characters are intriguing and the author gives just enough insight into their lives to make them interesting and make the reader hope that more Brekke translations will soon cross the ocean. Well worth the read. less

It's not that Brekke doesn't have enough skin in the game, but his story left me a bit drained.

Spennende ide og litt makaber fortelling, men det var litt for lett å se hva som skulle komme.

A little gorier than I like my mysteries, but Norway and palimpsests made it interesting.
