review 1: Judah Smith is conversational, honest, and grounded in truth. 'Jesus Is' drives readers back to the heart of the gospel, where grace and love abound far more greatly than we ever could have imagined. Smith reminds us who Jesus is: a friend of sinners, the personification of grace, the point of our existence, and much more. Though I questioned some liberties that he took in fleshing out certain Biblical accounts (especially the account of Zacchaeus), I still loved the book. Though I will be mulling over the concept of God's unmerited, perfect grace for the rest of my life without every fully grasping it, Smith definitely pushed me one step closer to understanding the very heart of God.
review 2: I want to give a disclaimer to the 2 stars I gave this book. For me... more it was just "okay", but I could see it being a decent book to give someone who is more on the outskirts of the faith, someone who hasn't heard the GOOD news about who Jesus is, so in that case I would give it 3 stars. But alas, I did not have the option for a 2 1/2 star rating. I was annoyed by Smith's attempts to be "relevant" with slang and jargon that I found distracting. At times it felt like he was trying too hard to act like "one of the cool kids"The "Embrace Grace" chapter was probably my favorite, as Smith talked about the parable of the prodigal son. I like his emphasis on the Father's extravagant grace. This is one message I don't think we can hear too much or too often. less
