Rakes and Rogues of the Restoration
review 1: This was a great book. I loved the hero William and also the heroine, Elizabeth. Childhood sweethearts, who meet again in the middle of Cromwell's reign when William has become a drunk and a rake. Lizzie still loves him, and finds herself in Charles II's regained court along with William who is championing her to regain her lands. William is loosely based on John Wilmot, a member of Charles' debauched court, which Lizzie does not approve of. I loved the inclusion of John Wilmot's poetry which I loved and will have to look into. The only thing that kept this from being a five was too much pre-marital sex, which I do not like.
review 2: What a great story. The Restoration period is not one that I have much exposure to and it is not the setting for any books that
... more I have read recently so this was new.As always the protagonists come from different sides of the Civil War. William was a Royalist and has aided Charles II (to be) ever since. Lizzy's father was a supporter of Cromwell. But before all of that William and Lizzy were childhood friends, both lonely they spent nearly every day together until William was sent to school.Years later William stumbles into Lizzy's house badly injured and fleeing from Cromwell's men. He doesn't recognise Lizzy but she has no trouble recognising him. After he leaves she is arrested by Cromwell's guards and barely escapes with her life - Cromwell instead decides to confiscate all her lands. After Charles II returns as King Lizzy visits the Court to plead for her lands - William is a member of the Court and renowned for his drunken debauchery - can they ever find the love they once had?I really enjoyed this and will be looking out for the next book in the series - annoyingly it was free for a short time on Amazon.com but not on Amazon.co.uk less

more like 2.5 stars...lost interest midway through and it only went downhill from there.

*The plot sounds interesting but really, it's the necklace that got me. I love it!
