review 1: This was a nice little book. I enjoy historical fiction and the opportunity to learn of history and other culturals while enjoying a story. This was no exception. It was a quick read, well written and a bit predictable, ending with all conflicts solved and a somwhat open-ended leading to a sequel, which I will seek out my next trip to the library. All in all, nice book to pass time with if you enjoy these kinds of novels.
review 2: When I lived in Iowa City, my family frequently visited the nearby Amana Colonies, but this is the first novel I've read that takes place in one of the seven communities. ... moree; however, that theme had plenty of opportunity to emerge throughout the story but didn't really come through until the last 20 pages or so. I now plan to read the second book in this series, as my local library conveniently has the whole series available for me to download to my nook. less
