review 1: This book was chosen by a member of my book club. Although the story line was fairly predictable, there were some unexpected moments, and several that brought tears to my eyes. I grew up in Pennsylvania and have visited Bedford, Altoona and other locations central to the story line. The story included descriptions of a stage coach ride from Altoona to Erie. Now that would have been quite a journey!
review 2: Another book I really loved. Great characters and written in such a way that I felt instantly drawn into the story, didn't want to put it down. Just a great story of a strong woman from a Quaker family before and during the Civil War, their work on the Underground Railroad, the development of the West and just their day to day lives. The reader really
... more gets a sense of the difficulties of daily life at that time as well as about Quaker daily life and beliefs and the struggle over those beliefs. I highly recommend it. less
