review 1: Didn't realize this novel was based on actual people.I liked the scenes with dialogue and action more than Margaret Sullivan's introspections. They slowed the book down. The author showed Margaret's inner conflicts just fine through the conversations she had and her actions/reactions to events.I had a little difficulty following the timeline of events at times, especially when the third part of the book leaped to 1889 from 1881 in the second part.I had no idea that much time supposedly passed in the second part. The trials of a woman trying to gain respect and autonomy and the problems of the Irish tenants during that period of history was interesting. It was difficult at times to determine if the author was writing a romance novel with historical novel overtones, or an hist... moreorical novel with romance novel overtones. While the problems of Ireland most certainly weren't resolved in 1889, the book ended on an unfinished note in that regard.
review 2: A fascinating historical novel that IMO would have been better without the romantic aspect thrown in to deflect from the real story...the struggle for freedom. The main character, Margaret Sullivan, a 1880s journalist, strives to address the injustice suffered by the poor in Ireland and the country's British control. The portrayal of the position of women during this period is accurately retold. The novel's ending... cheesy and not well done. less
