review 1: She may be a quiet compared to all the other animals on the farm but the Ladybird sees and hears everything that goes on. A good job too, a she is the one who unwittingly hears Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len plotting to steal the farms fine prize cow and it is the Ladybird who speaks up to devise a plan to catch the pesky pair. This charming rhyming, alliterative children’s picture book written by the author of The Gruffalo is everything you want for a bedtime story or a group read. The farmyard setting means it is perfectly placed for introducing different animals to young children yet the great plot means that you can play around with animal sounds and have dogs quacking and cats oinking. The rhyming makes this a fantastically easy book to read to your children as it keeps a... more lovely pace throughout. Enhanced by the excellent illustration, by Lydia Monks, all the characters are bright and colourful and there is a chance to spot the glittery ladybird on every page which adds a small sensory element to the book. With the large size, double page spread and bright colours this is a very visual book for those children who need more visual stimulation. The story has a good simple message that you do not always have to be loudest to make a difference which makes it a perfect story for an EYFS setting and I think it would work well as a circle time book. However, with its colourful illustration and simple vocabulary it might be well placed in a book corner in KS1 for children to have a look at themselves. It would be great to spend some time in class thinking of our own way to confuse Hefty Hugh and Lanky Len or to put our map making skills into practise and draw our own map of the farm.
review 2: I found this delightful book on a swap shelf at our local swimming pool. My daughter and I are big fans of ladybirds and we both adore Julia Donaldson's stories so this was the best find ever.A silent ladybird overhears some robbers and foils their plot to steal the prize cow by using all her noisy farmyard neighbours. Love it! My 14 month old was totally engaged in the rhymes and the noisy animals give the perfect opportunity for tentative talkers to join in the story. We took a couple of you and feel board books to the shelf as a swap. (We totally won that swap ha ha ;-)) less
