review 1: Growing up can be hard to do, especially when one does not wish to. This autobiographical graphic novel covers the high and low times of the author over a period of two years. In that time she moves from San Francisco to New York, lives in several places, and gets fired from six or seven (I lost count) jobs. The author reflects on life, her relationships with family and friends, the meaning of home and work, all while drinking at the movies, and pretty much everywhere else too.
review 2: So I've clearly been on a comix kick. I've been going to my neighborhood branch of the SFPL and just grabbing stuff off the graphic novels shelves that look interesting to me. I partially picked this one because I actually thought the art looked a bit amateur/crappy and that so
... moremehow made me feel better. (I have a lifelong fantasy of drawing and writing comics but I cannot draw for shit.) But not only is the art not crap (especially when Wertz does some interstitial illustrations to illustrate seasonal and locational changes), but I fell in love with the simplicity of it. And the stories. Wertz's style is witty without being pretentious and goofy without falling completely into toilet humor. Reading this collection brought back a lot of fond memories of living in Brooklyn/NYC. I just requested a couple more of her publications from the library and I'm psyched to delve further into her work! less
