review 1: This story isn't exactly what I expected, which was a series of vignettes about the adventures of a person who routinely drinks at the movies. Drinking at the movies did take place, but it was more symbolic of a life lived in limbo. Intensely funny but not without its dark side, this graphic memoir details the author's move from San Francisco to New York and her struggles with eking out an existence that means something. The author admits during this narrative that she perhaps didn't know what meaning she was searching for, but there was a constant and deft back and forth at play detailing the ups and downs Wertz went through during her early days in New York.I really liked how the author treated her own struggle with alcoholism. This wasn't a book about addiction, but it ... morewas a large part of Wertz's struggles. She played a lot of it humorously, but with a very knowing glance. Other issues came into play, too: depression, self-sabotage, fear of commitment. I really like the style, and I'd like to read more of this author's work.
review 2: I may have read this graphic novel before, but since I wasn't completely sure, I checked it out again. I love Julia Wertz. So many of the panels in this collection had me laughing so hard I cried. I don't think there is any higher praise than that. Autobiographical in nature, as Wertz herself tells her readers, this novel isn't your typical 'young ingenue comes to NYC and succeeds immediately, or even, comes to NYC and feels sorry for herself in any typical way. One of my favorite graphic novels so far. less
