review 1: I have inadvertently acquainted myself with Julia Wertz's work backwards, starting with Drinking at the Movies and working back towards The Fart Party. I really like her style, but have noticed that too much of the work is recycled. The subject matter deals with the daily insults and humiliations endured by the artist, but the wider arc outlines her decision and eventual move from San Francisco, a city she loves and calls home, to Brooklyn, New York. I fully appreciate that this is a huge move in anyone's life, particularly that of a young woman on her own, and she conveys the humour, fear and second-guessing that goes with making a crucial life decision. However, the same material appears in both books, along with the problems of her hugely dysfunctional family and chroni... morec health issues that plague her. All very interesting, but let's have some new material, let's move on. As for me, I guess it's time to read Fart Party Volume 1.
review 2: Technically I read these comics in their original web form, not as these paper collections; but I thought I'd add them anyway, just so I could mention this charming, filthy trainwreck of an autobiographical tale, the ongoing adventures of our nerdy hero as she moves back and forth between New York and California, starts to drink too much and then quits drinking altogether, and experiences a series of life-fails regarding work, romance, and pop-culture obsession. One of my favorite online comics of all time, and well worth the time of any fan of smart, bawdy humor. less
