review 1: It was disappointing. But most sequels are.I felt like the second book lost its momentum, that it had spent nearly all of its creativity on the first book, and that there was nearly none left over. There were some moments, however. Such as the very beginning, which was absolutely amazing. And there were some decisions made by the main characters that I did not approve of (PARTRIDGE HOW DARE YOU TAKE ADVANTAGE OF LYDA YOU BASTARD) but for most of the characters, all was good. El Capitan still exists as my favorite character.... He might actually be my favorite book character. I don't really know why, that's just how it is. *looks at the comments* mmmmeeeeeeehhhh why does everyone love the books I do not love? And why do I love the books the general population does not love? ... moreSuch issues.I wonder if they like it because of the epic ending. And there was an epic ending, I loved it. But not enough to cover up all the other awful parts.
review 2: It’s disappointing. After a bright start, the sequel failed to proceed with the success of the first book. There are too many points of view; uninteresting stories; new characters that, quite frankly, do nothing for the story; and a lot of contemplation. It seemed to me that the book is a big monologue from beginning to end. The characters are too focused on their feelings and thoughts, which makes them incredibly boring. The turning point for me was when Pressia nearly drowned. From there everything just went downhill. The best of: a good portion of the first half of the book, and a few pages at the end; Willa, the dome worshippers, robotic spiders, Fignan, Hastings, the Basement Boys; Bradwell with… wings?! I’m not sure about this yet, but it seems cool. Hence the cover. Nice. Oh, and grandpa Belze! The worst of: mostly the whole book; Iralene & Mimi (useless characters, imo); Partridge’s storyline, his daddy issues, the whole forced marriage thing, the memory loss, too contrived and uninteresting. Bradwell and Hastings were all right till they turned useless to the plot. Same goes for Lyda and the pregnancy. Drama alert!I already had difficulty connecting with the characters in the first book, so all these turns made it worse. I still like El Captain & Helmud, though. But what the author did to these characters is unforgivable. Why does every good relationship have to be substantiated by romance? Why, why, why?! less

Another pacey novel by Julianna Baggott. Lots of action and adventure and even (a little) romance.

Julianna Baggot is such a poetic author. Her story is good but her writing is wonderful.
