review 1: I really enjoyed this coming of age story. I had no idea until after I finished listening that it was classified as Christian lit. I'm glad I didn't know beforehand because I certainly wouldn't have chosen it if I did.But I have to say the spiritual/religious aspect of the story seemed appropriate in the main character's quest to better understand herself. The story never came off as preachy. Yes, the bible, belief and god were mentioned but all in the context of the characters and their experiences. It made sense for them to talk about and think about these things as it related to their experiences. Never did I feel like they were trying to convince me of anything.I loved the reader, Luci Christian Bell, she did a wonderful job with the voices and the accents. This was... more a quick read/listen, I wanted to know how things were going to turn out for the main character, young Millie Reynolds, who has more to deal with than she deserves. This story has great relationships, though many of them are dysfunctional. The dialogue is realistic and the way events unfold are believable but often sad.I'm looking forward to listening to the next book in this series. I hope that it will have all of the things that I enjoyed in this story and none of the things I typically fear will be included in Christian lit.
review 2: Millie is poor and living in a dysfunctional family, the only person giving her some direction in life is a caring elderly neighbour. Sloth. Her struggles as she grows through her teenage years into a young woman ready to forge her own life in the world. She wonders if God is with her or against her in all of this, if indeed there is a God. A light read with a very serious subject matter. This was a free E-book that I got from Book Shout. less
