review 1: Needs an editor.Seriously hope Julie Thomas didn't pay Carolyn Marino and Amanda Bergeron much, because they didn't do a very good job. Also, designer Diahann Sturge, what were you thinking? Did you even read the book? The cover makes the book look like it's going to be a holiday romance, but not the kind young people read; the kind old women read. Actually, it's a fascinating tale of a teenage boy and his love of baseball and music, of war and the tragedy faced by one Jewish family under Nazi rule, and then there's the not so fascinating parts (for me) - the patronage of classical music and a rich guy and his obsession with owning pretty things (whether they're objects or people).Could have been so much better, but good nonetheless. My flatmate raved about it for weeks as ... morehe read it.
review 2: NZ author. I wasn't sure about this through the first few pages but then I got quickly sucked in by the characters and plot and the little niggles I had didn't matter.Loved the heartwrenching, emotional story, and I'm a sucker for anything WW2 and/or music based. The characters were three dimensional, and yet despite the subject material ie the holocaust, and later in Russia, it wasn't a depressing read. I loved the way the violin connected the different stories. Definitely one I'd recommend for music lovers, and those who enjoy a well written historical. less
