review 1: This story has a little bit of mystery (a rare book gets stolen), a little bit of tragedy (mom has leukemia and needs a stem cell transplant), and a little bit of dysfunctional family (divorced dad is seldom around and Ella needs to send the summer with a grandmother she has never met). Yet the story grabs hold of you from the very first chapter that puts you in the middle of the story. Then Ella rewinds back to tell the reader how the book went missing and how she ended up with her gramdmother for the summer. Readers will root for Ella's mom and for Ella living with her grandmother (also known as GM-General Major). Ella has spunk and sees her dad and her grandmother very clearly for a girl of eleven years.
review 2: Endearing, upbeat, quick read, although
... morenot really my usual fare. Well, I do enjoy a fair amount of YA, but this had no magic, very little irony, and not even any Mathematics. It was labelled as a Mystery (from my library, anyway) which, well, I guess technically - there is something that needs to be figured out, and that adds some eleven-year-old urgency to the story, keeps it moving. The main character, however, is not lacking in energy or charm to begin with, so the "mystery" aspect is almost superfluous. The feeling one is left with is not so much "boy, I sure am relieved they solved that mystery" (oops - spoiler) but more "hey, everyone ended up being really nice to each other, and got to eat Mexican food in the end". That's nice. Recommended if you like endearing, upbeat, quick YA semi-mysteries with very little irony or Mathematics. less
