review 1: This was an excellent portrayal of the violence and pure craziness that was the French Revolution. The blood shed and just utter disregard for life that the French people had with anyone in the upper class, monarchy and clergy is just beyond comprehension. My heart ached for the queen when she lost her husband and dear friend. I was afraid for everyone in the book like I've never been afraid for someone before. It was beautifully written. Now the reason it is a 3 star review is because the obsession that was portrayed of Axel von Fersen was a little pathetic. There was so much going in and this continued obsession with him and continued secret meetings with him take away from the story and the horror of what was going on. It makes her the selfish, flippant, vapid person so... moreme historians want you to see her as. The fact of the matter she only ever had an emotional affair. If she had had a physical one with him, his sister would have known (Axel told his sister everything) and it would have been in his many diaries. He constantly spoke about wanting to physically have the queen but he never once spoke about actually having her. So anyway, if you can get past the ludicrous affair story in the book it is definitely worth reading!
review 2: I was so hesitant to start this book obviously knowing the fate. However, I have never read a historical account Marie Antoinette that so richly described, not only her final days but also illustrate an all-encompassing view of the troubled country surrounding her at that time. Most historical fiction novels with Marie Antoinette sum up her final days in a few chapters. I was absolutely enthralled with the amount of history poured into this novel. Very well done. less

Good book. I loved and still love Juliet Grey's trilogy: she really captured Marie really well.

Maybe it's me but this series got less engaging the closer we got to MA's actual demise.

Great end to a trilogy, and an interesting piece of historical fiction.

well written but took to long to "cut" to the chase.
