review 1: Evan Burl and the Falling by Justin Blaney is an interesting YA, science fiction novel. Reading it was like peeling the layers from an onion to unfold the story--except the layers were told from different view points and as a reader you weren't certain who to trust. This dizzying sense of separating each character's reality from the truth of the situation was both intriguing and bewildering. I usually read a novel straight through quite quickly, but I needed to pause more frequently with Evan's story. Just as I began to piece together who was honest, who was "good" and "evil"--just when I thought I knew where the story was headed, Blaney added a new knot to the plot. I think I'm going to need to give this one a second read very soon.
review 2: Let me start
... moreoff by saying this book was probably a 4.5 star earner but we don't have that option so it got four stars instead. I have seen this book on Goodreads Giveaways multiple times and each time agonized over signing up for it or not. The description was ok but it still didn't look like something I would really get into so I would skip on past. Later on, I stumbled across the kindle version for free on Amazon and took a chance. I am very glad I did. Somewhere there is a review of this book referring to it as "steampunk" and if that is the case, this is the first "steampunk" book I've ever read. And I liked it. The story starts kind of weird but as you read into it you will find that it had to. It really takes off and those who are familiar with this genre will have no problem following along. Those who tend to stay away from these kinds of books will catch on easily enough that the language and settings will make sense. This is the first in a series and the author leaves you hanging off a cliff wondering what will happen next but there is still enough closure there that if you don't get the chance to read the next installment you will not go out of your mind. Overall, this is a very good book and it is easy to see why it has such rave reviews.About Evan Burl...I really hope things work out for him. less
