review 1: Having been disappointed with 'The Promise of Happiness' I thought I'd give this author another try. An easy read, about the troubles experienced by an old English family run bank, and the effects it has on the elderly, ill father; his adoring secretary; his young wife; his son who has been running the bank; and his other son who has had nothing to do with the bank and gone off on his travels. Not to mention the wife's ex husband. It perhaps isn't the most exciting novel I've ever read, but highlights that 'There are beginnings and there are ends, and there are also many ways of telling the same story.'
review 2: I had read a couple of previous books by JC, of which I have fond memories, this, though felt thin and a bit rushed. I did pick it up at Heathrow and
... more did finish it, so this is no rejjection, merely a lukewarm endorsement. The story moves in worlds of which I have no inkling, and there is no great revelation, in fact it is hard to feel anything for the characters, plus the ending is no great denouement. Not a waste of time, perhaps is my damning by faint praise. less

this is the proper way of story-telling...many beginnings & many endings.

Very well written and almost a puzzle to try to figure out what happened.

Liked it a lot. Really well written and well considered.
