review 1: I tried to like this book, and read chapter after chapter in the hope that it would pick up, however it left me bored and uninterested. In a moment of tedium I turned to the last page which had 'to be continued ' written large. At this stage (chapter 12) I decided to give up, in my opinion life is too short to read a book that hasn't hooked you by then, and I couldn't face another volume of 'fantasy lite ' as another reviewer described Allies and Assassins. I have skim read the rest of the book so I know the plot.In fairness, this was an impulse buy from a bargain bucket and I was drawn to the cover. The blurb on the back made no mention of young adult fiction or I would have left well alone since it is not a favoured genre of mine. The blurb said 'They killed his brothe... morer. Now they are coming for him'....With no character development quite frankly I couldn't care much whether they got 'him', (Prince Jared) or not.
review 2: I have such mixed feelings about this book. The story line jumps from view point to view point very rapidly and does a good job showing just how confusing the whole issue of the assassination and murders was but it also meant that I never really got a feel for the main characters. I also am not sure why some information was given to us, but at the same time I do feel like this is the start of a series so hopefully that information will be relevant in the later books. While I was reading I was very immersed in the story but it did not take much to pull me out of the story (which is unusual- usually people have to say my name multiple times to get my attention)- and once I my focus was elsewhere I had no problem putting the book down (usually I try to squeeze in at least one more chapter- this one I found myself able to stop mid chapter without issue)I liked how this book shows how complex and confusing a royal court can be and how pretty much everyone has their own motivations for what they are doing and how they act. I did like this book, and I would recommend it to someone who likes political intrigue and light murder mysteries, it just didn't keep me on the edge of my seat the whole time. less
