review 1: This beautifully written book has three stories rolled into one. The author weaves the story of Daphne du Maurier's research and writing of the biography of Branwell Bronte into the life of a young woman who years later is researching Daphne du Maurier for a PhD thesis, and Mr. Symington, whose obsessive quest for everything Bronte is a bit unnatural. This entire book with it's dark and brooding atmosphere is an exercise in the study of relationships.Justine Picardie entertained and educated me on all the finer historical details of which I was not familiar. Her attention to detail is without fault and her research is impeccable creating a semi-gothic (I would have liked more) mood.Ms. Picardie has inspired me to re-read the books of Daphne du Maurier with more insight and a... morettention.
review 2: This is a wonderfully haunting story of literary obsession. A young woman married to a much older, increasingly distant man is researching Daphne Du Maurier's correspondence with an mysterious Bronte expert at the time she was researching her biography of Branwell Bronte. All three of the main characters (4 if you include Branwell) live mainly in their imaginations and , at the time we meet them, are going through deeply disturbing crises. Justine Picardie portrays their increasingly unbalanced thoughts, paranoia and obsessions beautifully. The book is full of echos of Du Maurier and the Brontes but never becomes a parody. It's left me wanting to reread the Brontes , read more Du Maurier and get hold of a Du Maurier biography as soon as possible. less

I was drawn in by the premise, but the actual book was disappointing.
