review 1: At the beginning of this book Kevin, the narrator, is a bully who takes his frustrations with his home life out on his classmates. He also releases steam by writing poetry. When one of his classmates finds his book of poetry and reveals it to the rest of the class, the tables turn as Kevin starts to get bullied himself. This was a very unique book. I have never read anything quite like it. It is told in very simple verse form along with poetic creations Kevin makes by using torn pages out of classic children's novels. The reader goes from disliking Kevin at first, to sympathizing with him. In the end, the reader is just as happy as Kevin is when his poetry not only transforms him, but those around him as well. This is a quick read with simple writing that I think a... more struggling older elementary aged reader could easily get into.
review 2: There is A LOT to like about this book. First, it takes a rather unsympathetic character -- a bully who enjoys tormenting his peers -- and makes him someone you feel sorry for once you see what's driving him to act the way he does. Second, it's written in awesome verse that is spot-on. Third, it has found-object poetry (if that's not a real term, I'm coining it now) inserted throughout that's integral to the plot. And, finally, this book contains humor and heart and hope -- three things that are hard to balance successfully in any work, but that flourish here. READ IT. less

An excellent book about the power of words, the power of books, and giving everyone a fair chance.

A quick, enjoyable read. I liked how the character redeemed himself.
