review 1: This book covers such a strong topic and life of such an important man in ways young readers can understand and learn. Topics like racism and protesting, inequality, and imprisonment are topics we often find uncomfortable talking about to our youth but in this book author Kadir Nelson does a great job at simplifying these harsh topics. The pictures are very accurate, bold, and paint great pictures for readers to visualize in their heads while reading. Kadir Nelson tells the story of Nelson Mandela from a young boy into adulthood in the perfect length, not too long, but gives readers the gist of his amazing honorary life. Nelson even uses words from Mandela’s South African language such as “Amandla!” and “Ngawethu!” meaning power to us, chanted and shouted by Mand... moreela and the people of South Africa during their protesting. This gives readers a feeling of realness and direct connection with the time period and events of the book.
review 2: In this heartfelt short biography, Kadir Nelson tells the story of Nelson Mandela who was a global icon, best known as the former president of South Africa. His biography tells the story of a young boy's determination to change South Africa, and that he did. I would implement this book into my classroom to help my students to help them gain a better understanding of Mandela. As an extension, my students could work on a project in groups where they would take certain key points of his life and create a project with pictures and sentences and share it with us as a whole. less
