review 1: A very moving view of a couple from their first meeting in 1942 to old age in the 21st century. It shows the challenges that faced gay couples throughout the 20th century, but also highlights the difficulties that are faced by 'ordinary' couples. The feeling in the book is a lovely one of 'love conquers all', especially as the viewpoint is realistic in showing that it's not always easy to be with someone. Great read!
review 2: One of the most beautiful and moving stories I've ever read. It's one of those books that, after the last word, I just sit in reflection. There is a fair amount of sexual content (mostly in the beginning) as these two sexually inexperienced men find their way. This is a story of two souls meant to be together, and they know it. But, i... moremagine what it meant to be gay in the 1940's! The author follows them over 6 decades, through their participation in WWII in the US Navy -- leaving them with some physical scars and some emotional scars -- and then through their lives to 2011. Although they encounter life's difficulties, as do we all (but more complicated, since they are gay), they see each other through it all, with love, patience, and understanding. And with the inevitable ups and downs. Very realistic relationship but a rare one, as there is so much commitment, compassion, deep caring and respect for one another. This is a heartwarming story, and I fell in love with the 2 main characters. Their commitment and way of loving and caring about each other caused me to reflect on my own life, questioning why I have not come even close to living those qualities they displayed. less
