review 1: Best chapters of Vol.5 are, hands down, "A Day in the Life" and "Fever". The first one is about Amir and Karluk (who has to be one of mmy favorite couples in a manga, they are impossible not to love!) and the second one is about Karluk´s mother and her husband. The preparations for the wedding were a joy to read, how all people in the village help in a way or the other (women with the decorations and food; men with the meat). Poor brides have to spent all day being quiet and welcoming the guests, so it was very hard for the twins. Not a lot about Amir and her story, but the ceremony of the wedding compensates it.
review 2: The overly long digression of the story of the twins Laila and Leily reaches its conclusion. I found their half of this volume more palatable
... more than I recall most of volume 4 being, but it is nice to be done with them. The second half of the volume gets back to Amir and Karluk and their family but does little to advance the overarching plot, rather focusing on fairly small events in their daily lives; but of course that is part of the charm of this series. I can't be sure that this is in anyway an accurate portrayal of life in this time and place, but the author does have a reputation for doing solid research and the sense of place and artistic detail is so good I find I don't care too much about authenticity. The one problem is that everyone is so excessively happy and nice; I just don't think people are that open in real life, whatever culture they come from. Still, it is part of the charm. less
