review 1: Hands Around the Library tells the story of how the Alexandria Library was saved amidst the chaos of Egyptians fed up with their lack of freedom. Mobs of Egyptians marched and rioted the streets when others surrounded the library, striving to protect it in all its greatness. Hands Around the Library: Protecting Egypt’s Treasured Books serves to inform readers about the unifying power the Alexandria Library had in Egypt, and how much people truly value Egypt’s stories. The story was told in a way that seems very fictional, but at the end the reader finds out that the story is, in fact, accurate. Roth and Abouraya made a great decision to include a series of photographs that show the Alexandria Library and those who participated in the marches. Using authentic photograph... mores shows that the story was factual. The book was weak in that it did not provide much information on Egyptian culture. Multicultural literature describes cultures, and this book just chronicles a protest in Egypt and the march on the Alexandria Library. Students cannot learn valuable information about a different culture from this book.
review 2: I really enjoyed this book, as it gives a chance to students to discuss and think about Egypt in its current state. Too often, I think that history tends to create stereotypes that last in us. I'm glad that there are books like this that discuss the serious things around the world, and also expresses the deep importance of libraries, as the Egyptians have expressed through there action. The paper designs of each of the pages were done very well, and were a joy to look through. This is a great book to reflect on what your local library means to you! less
