review 1: Jake Donovan lost his son in a car explosion that was meant for him. So his wife never forgave him for the loss of their child and they divorced. He meets Sara and starts to heal. They are going to get married and she finds out that she is pregnant, but Jake never wants to have children again. He walks away from her two days before the marriage and she doesn't get the chance to tell him that she is already pregnant.Four years later this story begins with Sara and her son Christopher. She never told Jake about the child, but here for once I feel like she was justified because Jake walked away amidst explaining clearly that he never wants children. There was no ambiguity in his feelings so Sara has the child by herself. Her mother suddenly dies and Sara is pushed to finally ... moretell Jake about the child.Jake is such a bitter stubborn man that I find his personality irritating. For once, I sympathize with the heroine, she is independent and smart, even though she may have made one mistake (only one!) in her short life which was not telling Jake about their son. Jake really angered me in several parts in the novel, but in a way he was a human character with flaws and inconsistencies, so I credit the author with creating a real person for me to hate in this story. There was so much based on trust issues, but then again, just about anything bad that could happen to a person happened to Jake, so I had to forgive him in the end for taking soooooo long to get over it and love Sara who was nothing but kindness and goodness.Kindle freebie and 179 pages2 stars
review 2: Please, Sara, run, don't walk, to Doormats Anonymous--you are seriously in need of help! How much emotional abuse is one person expected to swallow just for the great privilege of staying married to a total Jacka$$, and how can anyone even vaguely define the goings-on in this book as love? Sex is seen as just an opportunity to "earn" love. And her reward for slithering on her belly in order to please Czar Jake the Terrible--his questioning her motives as to just how desperate is she for a meal ticket! The author kept saying that there was nothing Sara could say. Well, I could think of a lot of things she could have said--and done--but licking his boots is not one of them. I would hate to think that there might be anyone reading this book who might in any way be thinking that swallowing abuse like Sara does is okay, ever, in any relationship, for any reason, nor that knocking yourself out to maintain an abusive relationship can actually lead to an HEA. Maybe my negative reaction to the abusive Jake and the masaochistic Sara is an indication of the quality of the author's writing. but I simply could not enjoy a book filled with so much abuse, and I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that kowtowing to an abuser like this never earns you an HEA; it might get you beaten or killed but buy you love, never. less
