review 1: I was a little lost in the beginning with the different words and names, but I got used to it. I love this book and wish that I had the other two to go with it. It reminded me of Beta a little bit, but it was still different. I liked going back and forth between Kayla and Mishalla. I definitely didn't see the ending coming though. It made me sad! I hope things work out the way I want them too. I am not going to say anything else so I don't spoil it for anyone who may want to read it.
review 2: I would love to see this YA dystopia in comic form-- the vivid world that Sandler draws is super-visual and the story would translate well into pictures. It's a complicated world, one that asks young readers to think about issues of class, race, and the use/misuse
... more of technology in a critical way and with less vapid pulpiness than several other popular dystopias ("Delerium" for instance). That being said, I never felt drawn in or fully engaged. I never felt that push to read "just one more chapter" before I turned out my bedside lamp, and I regret that. Kayla and Mishalla were interesting and likeable enough, but I don't miss them when the book is closed. The characters felt flat and the love-story seemed REALLy contrived. I will probably stock this in my classroom library (a kick-butt heronie-of-color is impossible to pass up), and I will be curious to see if my students feel differently. less
