review 1: I'm a huge fan of the video game series and a huge book fan so when they pulled this out of their hats I couldn't resist! Gears of war became more of just a game to me thanks to these books. I loved getting more insight on the characters I was playing as and it made it more personal cause I felt as if I actually knew these people. These are fantastic books to read whether you got some gameplay in or not!
review 2: Important to note- there's two kinds of video game players: those who disgustedly skip cutscenes any time they are given the option and those who don't. If you are part of the former, I'd give this one a pass.Gears of War is not a story driven series. It's the kind of game you can enjoy just as much with the sound off and a smoke in your hand. Yet som... moreehow, Karen Traviss manages to remedy this. This entire book series offers an insight to the characters and their past that manages to literally change the way you play the games. It makes you turn the volume up. It makes you care.If you're not a Gears of War fan? This book probably isn't for you. It's a mash up of sci-fi and war fiction that leaves much to be desired. However- as a player of the games, this series will add an entire new dimension to the characters you know and love. less
