review 1: Interesting take on relationships and how ugly things can be transformed and made beautiful. Set in Biloxi, Mississippi and New Orleans, often retelling the pain of the hurricanes that ravaged the area, mixed in with family strife, death and drama, not a bad story. Very compelling read but too long to get to the last few pages where the secrets are revealed. Lots of buildup. Where is Beau's father? Monica just "hooked up" with some dude!? I wish there was some resolution. None about that. Too bad, I loved the tree symbolism. Something of beauty out of something dead and ugly. There is always hope. One of my favorite themes. Maybe 3.5.
review 2: Great story, great characters and I learned so much about New Orleans and Biloxi. This book will help
... moreyou understand and not forget about Hurricane Katrina. However, only 3 stars because Ms. White puts in too many details about ordinary things--like the description of Aimee's laundry room towards the end of the book that just slow down the reader and don't impact the story. Ms. White's description of plants and creatures inhabiting the region was superb. less
