review 1: This book is getting a lot of hype so I had to read it to see who I should recommend it to. A young girl who is recovering from a heart transplant see her mother killed in the yard behind her house. What makes this odder is that thee girl hasn't seen her mother in over ten years as she left town under suspicious circumstances involving what may be a white slavery ring, drug-running and some theft issues. I couldn't tell from the beginning whether Grace is a reliable narrator as her voice is very passive and we spend most of the time from the POV of the pregnant FBI agent sent to investigate and the paramedic who arrives on the scene. Thus Grace never really comes out as the major player she should be, although the story completely revolves around her. The supporting charac... moreters carry the story and the winter setting is very vivid. It may take me a week or so to decide if I really liked it or if the comparison to the movie Fargo can't be ignored.
review 2: It has been a while since I’ve read a book I couldn’t put down; Karin Salvalaggio’s Bone Dust White delivers that satisfying experience. The book wrapped me up in its plot, embedded its characters in my imagination and took me on a dark and compelling journey. Bone Dust White casts the universal and age-old themes of greed, power and exploitation into contemporary issues of sex trafficking, pedophilia and domestic abuse. Set in the run-down town of Collier, Montana in the winter, the gritty, chilled atmosphere is expertly woven into the story, coloring the scenes and seeping off the pages. The three main characters are authentically composed and, as the plot progresses, they gradually reveal their strengths, their flaws and their secrets. I confess, by the end of the book, I wanted to spend more time with each of them. I hope we will see more of these characters and read more of Karin Salvalaggio’s work. less
