review 1: I loved the premise behind Inhuman, and I loved that the character names had a reason. So many dystopias today have characters with unique names for the sake of flaunting these unique names. But Inhuman had unique names that had a solid reasoning. That was awesome. Overall, though, Inhuman wasn't quite all that I had expected. Like I said, I enjoyed it. But I also had a lot of issues with it. First of all, the triangle. Triangles are... infuriating. And that's being nice. Triangles have to be handled very delicately (if you're looking for a good example, look no further than The Infernal Devices by Cassandra Clare. That love triangle. Ouch.) This love triangle... not so much. It was like The Hunger Games all over again. You have two options: ultra douche, or... more nice guy. (To be fair, Gale wasn't an ultra douche until Mockingjay. But he wasn't that great to begin with.) Rafe is ultra douche from the get go, and we're supposed to expect Lane to fall in love with him? Everson was a thousand times greater. He was interesting and nice, and a really solid character. Rafe was a jerk grabbed from a bucket of jerks that writers go to when they need a random character. Only in extreme circumstances can the bucket be used, and if that circumstance should arrive and be allowed, it's only for a character that you need for half a minute. And if it's that small of a part, it's probably not necessary. Back to the main point, you can't use that bucket for a main character. That's an injustice to the readers. Rafe was nothing more than a shallow, rude character who we're supposed to fall in love with in a heartbeat because he tells Lane the same story her father told her. Nope. I'm good. Everson's good. Also, let's talk about Lane for a bit. Lane could be rather... stupid. Like really, seriously, did you just say that stupid. And her stupidity is rather aggravating so I'm just going to leave that topic right there. Take from it what you will. Finally, the plot. The plot was predictable, and that's being nice. Author's often put in subtle comments to foreshadow what will come. These were so obvious I was calling them before they were mentioned. Lane leaves Everson behind for a bit--he'll show up and he and Rafe will but heads. That slightly dangerous character we first meet on the other side? He'll be the main "bad guy" later. (He's a very typical bad guy. The boring, not well written kind. Again, probably from a bucket.) That guy we focused on at the base that was severely injured? Yeah, he's definitely her dad. Like I said before--I liked the book. I liked the premise and I liked the names of the characters. But that doesn't change the fact that it wasn't the best I've read. Still, I'm interested just enough to continue. We'll see how that goes.
review 2: Truly a master piece! Alot of people disliked Rafe but I quite enjoyed his comical relief. Everson and Rafe are not alike because Rafe is more of the rouge cop meaning he enjoys being rude and cracking jokes while Everson is the brave and misunderstood guy who always is around when you need him. The love triangle didn't bother me at all. Plot twists are glor (especially the one at the last page). Love, loss and everything you need for a refreshing story. less
