review 1: Another story in my holiday book phase . . . Really enjoyed the stories by Kate Angell and Sandra Hill. Kate Angell's "Ho, Humbug, Ho" is part of the Richmond Rogues series. I enjoyed both the hero and heroine equally. The story is good and dialogue is amusing.Sandra Hill's "Naughty or Nice" was great. The humor was the best part of the story. The quickness of the characters' feelings towards each other, well . . . it's a cute, short romance.Joy Nash's "Christmas Unplugged" was my least favorite of the three stories. While the storyline was good, I didn't really click with the characters as I did the previous two stories. At any rate, for a free book, I cannot complain.
review 2: Courtesy of CK2S Kwips and KritiquesSanta, Honey is a compilation of three Christm
... moreas romantic comedies, and “Santa” plays a role in all three of them. While this was a pleasant way to spend a few hours during the holidays, there’s really only one I came away from with the feeling I had read a great story. In Ho, Humbug, Ho by Kate Angell, star baseball player Alex Boxer is sentenced to 40 hours of community service for speeding in a school zone. All he cares about is a holiday on the beach with sexy bikini-clad women and lots of alcohol. What he gets is time served playing Santa Claus at the local mall, and falling for his nutcracker of a supervisor, Holly McIntyre. Ho, Humbug, Ho was my least favorite of the three stories in the collection. Alex came across to me not as an alpha hero, but rather an alpha jerk. I couldn’t believe that he'd have a complete change of heart, going from a womanizing party animal city man to loving, kind-hearted, one woman man content in a small town in the space of one week. I liked Holly, even though I questioned her judgment falling for someone like Alex. She is all heart, giving all of her spare time and energy into service for her local community. In Naughty or Nice by Sandra Hill, Jessica Jones is convinced she suffers from a Christmas Curse where nothing good ever happens over the holiday. This is evidenced by the fact she is in a supermarket late at night, dressed in a Santa suit, on a “stick out” to steal $39.95. Things go from bad to worse when she accidentally shoots out the Pepsi cooler, and takes hostage a Santa-clad man, Luke Carter. It all goes downhill from there as Jessica suffers through her worst Christmas yet. Or does she?Naughty or Nice was a more than obvious reprint of an earlier work. Even had I not read the copyright page, I’d have known this immediately since it hasn’t been updated at all. While this was an amusing madcap of an adventure, there are far too many pop culture references from the 90s that aren’t quite so popular anymore. I really wish this one had been modernized at least a little bit, since some of misunderstandings and misadventures would never happen nowadays. Jessica is a sweet woman who has had a run of bad luck over the holidays, but her heart is in the right place. All she really wants is to survive Christmas and at the same time make it unforgettable for an assortment of misfit foster children. In Christmas Unplugged by Joy Nash, computer whiz Casey very grudgingly gives in to her aspiring actress sister, Emma, agreeing to spend a weekend at Dutch Lodge. Casey is furious to discover there’s not even any electricity at the out of the way place. She only gets more upset when Emma falls for Jake, who works at the lodge, leaving her stranded without even a bedroom to sleep in. Fortunately, Jake’s brother, Matt, is there to distract Casey and keep her occupied. Sometimes the gift Father Christmas brings is love with a special someone. This closing story in Santa, Honey was my favorite of the bunch. I just adore Joy Nash’s writing and in Christmas Unplugged, she demonstrates the ability to tell a compelling story with a shorter word count. Casey and Emma are such opposites in personalities with Casey the practical one and Emma the dreamer. Casey’s feelings of being overshadowed by her ebullient and beautiful sister felt very real. After all, I think most of us have felt at some time or another that we didn’t measure up when compared to other women, especially our siblings. Matt is a delightful man, perfect for Casey, though it takes her a little while to see that for herself. Christmas Unplugged, left me with the contented feeling that these two pairs of lovebirds were going to make it for the long term.Santa, Honey is an amusing collection of Christmas adventures, even if they are uneven in individual enjoyment levels. Most everyone will find at least one story to love in the collection, maybe even finding a new author to try in future endeavors.© Kelley A. Hartsell, January 2010. All rights reserved. less
