review 1: I admire Kate Colquhoun's ability to weave the narrative around the sensational Victorian murder of a City banker. This page turner will have you sitting up late at night, as the author deftly peels the onion to reveal the elements of a great story. The era, the great railway, and the lives of the characters are firmly handled as the story unfolds. As with all truly excellent historical non-fiction, Mr. Briggs' Hat reads like a novel, and when we remember it is not, we applaud the author's creative abilities. I am looking forward to reading Kate Colquhoun's next book!
review 2: After I read Suspicions of Mr Whicher I was looking for another true crime story but so many authors jump on the band wagon when something is successful so I was careful. I waited a few
... more months for this to come out in paperback and I was not disappointed. Really interesting read and amazing for the time how much effort the authorities put into bringing the culprit to justice. It is obvious a great deal of research has gone into the book and it shows. If you enjoyed the Whicher book then you will love this one too. My mum is reading it now. less

I enjoyed the book, but never found out what really happened. I was none the wiser at the end.

This started off really well and became bogged down with technicalities.
