review 1: I loved this. It was fun and exciting, though I suppose it does meander a bit, the love interest was ridiculous (like really, then why did you treat her that way?), and I did not like Bee, at least I didn't like her as a foil for Cat for whatever reason which made the beginning and end a little tedious to read. Overall I loved this book and plan on buying it properly instead of just getting it from the library. The world was interesting to be in, the magic was all over the place, and the back story was both predictable, but overall held up by a main character I genuinely enjoyed reading and following in her travels.
review 2: Kate Elliott is fantastic, as usual. I bumped my review from 4.5 stars to 5 because there are a lot of reviewers on Goodreads complain
... moreing about a lack of "plot" or that it's boring. While there's no absolute accounting for taste, I find these allegations very silly indeed! Laid against rich world-building, in a land rife with political and social struggle that are Elliott trademarks, Cat Barahal must discover why her family made a secret agreement for a marriage contract with a house of powerful mages 13 years ago, the source of her puzzling powers, and how to protect her family from powerful magical and political factions. In all this there is a wonderfully subtle and slow-building Victorian style romance. I have to say that I fear the tweeny cover of this book did the author no favors...it seems that a number of readers were expecting a straightforward, plot-driven steampunk romance (try Meljean Brook if that's your bag). Instead you should expect Elliott's wonderfully sophisticated, character-focused, mixed-genre mystery/historical counterfactual that in turn sets up a panorama of historical and political struggle to be resolved in subsequent volumes. I devoured this book voraciously and can't wait to start the next! less
