review 1: What can I say about this book that has already been said? it was amazing, and the series got better book by book. The thing that puts this book apart from others is that it does not have a over-used plot-line. This series was fresh and interesting. I loved how the characters grew from the first book. What really sold this story to me is the changes these characters went through, and how real they seem. If anyone has read Starcrossed by Josephine Angelini or a similar book, , the perfection of the main characters got on my nerves! Andevai was as far from perfect as they come, rude, arrogant, prideful, vain and suffering from a major inferiority complex. And the amazing part is that he is still prideful, and vain and he still makes mistakes that has Cat running away from h... moreim. And yet he makes up for them, and apologizes and learns from his mistakes (and makes us fall back in love with him). I love how real Vai is compared to other perfect (and oh-so-annoying) characters in other books. I also find the slow attraction between Cat and Vai that emerges into such strong friendship and love to be outstanding. There is alot more development between Cat and Vai in this book that the other two combined, in my opinion, and it is fantastic! I felt it was appropriate for the two to get to know each other and slowly and gradually fall in love than shallow insta-love. If you are looking for a series that not only has an amazing story line, but one in which you can connect and fall in love with the characters, imperfections and all, this is definitely a book I would recommend.
review 2: Cold steel is the last book of Kate Elliott's Spirit Walker trilogy. Overall, the series is unexpectedly entertaining and a very decent read. The protagonist of this series is Catherine Bell Bahral or Cat in short. Cat is a stubborn, reckless and a sharp-tongued individual. But she is also a loyal, capable and courageous young woman.I really love the fact that Cat is not a one dimensional character. On one hand, she would gladly sacrifice herself to save her loved ones but on the other she is capable to wield her sword to kill.Besides Cat, there are also a few well developed characters. For instance, there is also Beatrice (Bee), Cat's cousin. Well, my first impression of Bee isn't very good. I thought her to be a typical bimbo, who is easily charmed by the any good looking individual, as seen by her infatuation with Amadou Barry. However, as the plot progresses, she proved to have more depth than I first thought. She is a progressive young lady who is very vocal with her thoughts. She isn't blunt like Cat, she knows what and how to say something at the right time. There is also Andevai, Cat's Husband. Well, honestly I cant believe he was those kind of characters who fell in love at first sight. But to be fair to him, it wasn't revealed until much later in the story. Andevai is a powerful cold mage with an ego problem which Cat always reminds him of. I dislike Vai at first. As I learnt his story, I sympathise him and grew fonder with him. He is the total opposite of Cat but I do find that they go well together. Vai and Cat is one of the sweetest couple I've read and it always warms my heart to see them bickering with each other. All in all, most of the characters in the book are well developed , though they don't get a lot of screen time. The characters aren't just good or bad. They really have two sides to them. However, one thing that I disliked about this series is that Cat and Bee kept being trapped in the cycle of being captured and escaping afterwards. It is kind of repetitive and annoying how they were captured by the power players in the book, at least once. In conclusion, Cold steel and the spirit walker trilogy isn't the type of fantasy book(s) that I would normally pick but I am glad to say that I didn't regret my choice at all. less
