review 1: This was a surprise reading success. Based on real historical figures and considerable research on life in New York in the 19th century, I enjoyed this well written tale of Axie the poor Irish girl who battled all that life could throw at her - and ended up triumphant. Great well developed characters, excellent writing. You will also discover some almost forgotten old words. Pace of the story never lets up.
review 2: Although this book's setting takes place over 150 years ago (wow), the current political interest in throttling our access to reproductive options shows just how far we have (and have not) come in securing a woman's right to make decisions for her body.
