review 1: I love historical fiction where part of the book is a true story. Madame X (Axie Muldoon) was a midwife for 20 years in NYC. But before she became a midwife, she was an orphan, during terrible times in the late 19th century. Axie was on the orphan train, not being adopted and then began her life as a maid, learning the midwife trade. This book dealt with women's issues, abortion, birth control, how to please your mate, etc. and showed how it was done in a time where all of this was illegal.
review 2: Deals with what is still an important issue of our times. Protagonist is realistically and brilliantly drawn, with a voice I can still hear in my head. Good foreshadowing, even allowing a bit of suspense, but the main point is the character and the stories she t... moreells, the arguments she presents. Really good historical fiction. Despite the seriousness of the themes, there's plenty of humor, too. A fast and enjoyable read. less
