review 1: Giovanni Boca's career as an upcoming opera legend was halted by a vocal chords injury and now teaches voice lessons at a prestigious New York city music school. In one of his summer workshops, he discovered fourteen year old Emma McPhee whom he sees as his new protégé. When he meets Emma's father, mutual attraction ensues between them. Mike, a blue collar hard working guy will do everything for his daughter's dream. Raising Emma alone when his partner died years ago, he find himself taking solace from Gio as they shared their losses and try to build something for themselves. But with an intense stage mother intent on separating them and possibly destroying Emma's dream - will either of them be able to survive yet another loss? I've never read a book that talks so much a... morebout opera that it feels like I'm watching / hearing one. It's actually un-sexy to read the sex scenes described via musical or operatic terms. It was a total nosebleed. The conflict itself was kind of weak rendering the story linear - almost boring. One thing that I loved about it is the stark portrayal of reality in it, the money talks, the politics and all. It was very realistic and the author didn't try to make less of it. So this book's not the romantic musicale that you may enjoy if you're into this sort of stuff.Rating: 3 out of 5 stars
review 2: 2.5Sorry but struggled with this one - don't usually write negative reviews but this book bothered me enough that I just had to.Started off liking Mike but by the end I could not stand the guy - he did nothing but moan and whine, he was the ultimate pessimist. Don't get me wrong I get losing his partner was devastating but after 11 years he was STILL feeling guilty for moving on!! (may seem harsh but I just found that too much!).Thought Gio was ok but the way he handled the stage Mom situation was pathetic he barely stuck up for himself! I didnt understand his determination to get together with Mike at all - not sure Mike was worth it and Mike's daughter Emma loved Gio until she thought their relationship would affect her singing and then basically told Mike she did't approve!!Disappointed as I have loved previous books of Kate's. less
