review 1: This was surprisingly good. It starts slow, and the first steamy scene is written so dispassionately that it's a turn-off, but then it becomes clear why that was -- deliberate on the part of the writer, I think. Characters are interesting, but more could be fleshed out. Morosov is quite clear, Ella starting to be real, but the rest are a little thinner than I'd like. The premise and story are clever, though, and Morosov is fascinating.
review 2: This is my first book by Kate Pearce and i must say i did enjoy it so here goes...Ella works for the San Francisco SBLE and uses her powers as an empath to keep the otherworldly beings in check and remove the memories of any encounters from the human mind. Ella is nearing her 27th birthday and it is well known that
... morewhen empaths reach that big mile stone their abilities get the better of them and they either go insane or die unless they find a suitable mate. There is a number of suspicious deaths of empaths that are nearing their 27th birthday where their memory is completely wiped and during autopsy it is shown that their brains have been turned to.. well mush really which then confirms that this is murder. Alexie and Vadim have been sent from Moscow to help with the investigations and without giving too much away Vadim and Ella mate to enhance their powers and so that Ella doesnt loose her mind. Now the book was good. Lots of action and was well balanced but I'm still struggling as to whether Vadim and Ella actually liked each other in the end or if they just put up with each other because... well they have to as they are mated. The sex seems to be more necessity then want so i dont really think there is anything between them other than mutual survival... they both use each other for their own gain - Vadim uses Ella as once he has mated with a human he can live on either side (Otherworld or in the human world) and Ella uses him because without a mate she will face her ultimate demise so I'm really not seeing the love here unfortunately but i think if it was all lovey dovey then the book wouldn't be original as such. In all honesty i think they just tolerate each other but hopefully things will become clearer in the next book! less

It wasn't bad, it wasn't great. So it should really have 2.5 stars to make it smack in the middle.

Good idea. A bit of a bumpy ride, though. The book is a bit uneven and so are characters.
