review 1: Great reviews of this and I really tried to like it. I got to page 60 of 300 some but had to quit. I found the characters unbelievable. Main character's wife died. He found a box of memorabilia in her closet and went to a town that led him to. He knew NOTHING about his wife's past. How believable is that? He booked a room in a boarding house and didn't come out of it for 4 days. Meanwhile the owner, her daughter and the tenants made fun of him. What kind of owner would do that?? He came out finally and was so distraught he sounded like a female - super sensitive. Bah. I gave up.
review 2: I enjoyed reading this...the references were fun, the writing was good without being fussy (perhaps the character names were a bit overly quirky, but I don't mind ... morethat sort of thing) and the characters were fully realized. The central relationship is well handled...it could have easily been weird given the circumstances, but it progresses in a way that makes sense. Also, I would happily read a book just about Dani because I loved her. less
