review 1: This book was somewhat enjoyable, but was extremely flawed. It used the structure of the "one big secret," which even I, who can never predict anything in movies and books, was able to figure out in the first few pages. What was incredibly irritating about reading this book was that all of the suspense was built around this one secret, but because the author clearly didn't want to reveal it until the end, she withheld information from the reader instead of slowly and organically revealing its background and context. (And it wasn't a very interesting secret anyway). Some of the writing was inspired, but most of it was kind of tired (the number of times characters were described as blinking, not blinking, and blinking rapidly was maddening). The story didn't make much se... morense: in the age of the internet, Amy's death and Arthur's disappearance would have been public in a split second, even if they were as isolated as the author described them, which would have been unlikely, given their personalities. Less drama, less emphasis on the "big reveal" and more focus on characterization would have made this a much more compelling book.
review 2: I grabbed this from the library not long after finishing Kate Racculia's second novel, Bellweather Rhapsody. Although the story in This Must Be the Place is predictable at times, I love Racculia's writing, which is both intellectual and relatable. This is a novel about relationships, discovery, and journeys; it's hard to put down once it's started. I'll be looking for more of this author's work in the future! less

While I'll admit, I found the read a bit slow for my liking, the story was enjoyable.
