review 1: I love Kate Sherwood's writing, the dry humor heavily prevalent in her dialogue. It's exactly my kind of humor. I think I liked this equally as much as Shying Away--maybe a little more. I really liked both Mark and Lucas, and in places where either or both of them could have become whiny or annoying self-loathing, they didn't. Alex was a good supporting character, as was Elise (Sean was a bit loathsome but I felt for him, too). Her stuff always has just the right amount of angst, that was true for this one, too.I'm usually not a huge fan of stuff with religious themes, but it actually really worked for me here. I thought it gave Mark depth and character without trying to sell religion to the reader. Maybe because he didn't try to force religion on anyone inappropriately, a... moren angle I'm sure other authors might have taken. One of the reasons I like Kate's stuff is because her writing is smart. Not all authors can write with confidence about such varied characters (and pull it off), and she does.
review 2: Bought this after reading a review at Dear Author and really enjoyed it. Solid, gritty story backed up with a sweet, slow-growing relationship. At times the angst and lack of hope made me wonder how the author could pull off a HEA but it was done in a realistic, believable way and I liked both main characters a lot (and the squirrel. Aww). And because I pick up on typos (unless I wrote them ;-)): two uses of 'discrete' that should've been 'discreet' and one 'desert' that should've been 'dessert' but I loved it too much to mind. less
