review 1: As with all the books in this series, there is always a heavier undercurrent and serious issues. This one is one of the harder ones to read, yes we know Dan ends up in a good place in life and I've already got a pretty good idea of his history because of the previous books, but watching Dan go through it all is still really tough. Gah..as a mother it just kills me to see that his mom didn't protect him and stand up for him, didn't give him a safe place to be.But I guess everything he went through made him who he is, and it does explain a lot of his issues, but boy do I wish it hadn't been quite so hard on him.Just reading how he rationalizes the rape, to be able to live with it..heart breaking.
review 2: Just a small glimpse into Dan's past. It gives you a few
... more of the details that were hinted at elsewhere, and an understanding of Dan's odd tendency to waver between passive and aggressive behavior. Packs a punch and yet there is just a little remove, maybe because of the second person present tense which gives it a quality like a memory or a dream. It would be frustrating to read on its own, I think, because it requires the ties into Dan's future in other books to relieve the bleakness. less
