review 1: Wonderful, fever dream writing style, that seems like it's constantly on the verge of going off the rails but never does. Koja is a very skilled writer, but I found myself not liking the story she chose to tell. Everyone seems obsessed with either Rupert or Istvan, be they generals or financiers or brothel madams or aristocrats - and woe to anyone who tries to get between them. But I couldn't see the appeal, Rupert was dour and brooding and Istvan cruel (also I'm not too crazy about puppets). Even their love didn't seem as everlasting as Koja seemed to think, Rupert looking for stability and Istvan constantly upsetting the apple cart. The secondary characters were well drawn but their fortunes seemed to depend on how much they supported our one true co... moreuple.
review 2: WOW! Compelling, exceptional and very different. Super details. My husband and I loved this book. It is set in 1970s wartime Brussels in a brothel that features acting, puppets and other delights. The characters are diverse and well-fleshed out (in more ways than one.) In a way, it's an unusual romance. It features love and hate and romance and death, war, intrigue, blackmail, murder. While perhaps not for the faint of heart, it is a satisfying read. Three of the main characters, while damaged in multiple ways by life, find varying degrees of appropriate and gratifying fulfillment. less

Hookers, puppets, war in Europe, gay male lovers. A beautifully told dark tale.

Massively too long. Could have been half the length and still been as dull.
