review 1: Some people have a costume party. Some people deck out their yards and houses. Others take the little ones trick-or-treating. For me, there's no better way to celebrate Halloween than with a fun and frightful mystery and that's just what Kathi Daley delivers in Halloween Hijinks. I've read another of Kathi's Zoe Donovan mysteries, but really relished this opportunity to start the series from the beginning. For now, I'm on something of a dual track - reading the first and latest releases from this author that I love more and more with every reading experience. Going back to the beginning gave me the chance to see how everything started and I'm eager to carry on from here.Halloween Hijinks introduces readers to Zoe Donovan, her family, her friends, and her charming hometown... more. The character canvas is full with not only humans, but plenty of pets, animals, and wildlife friends, as well! I so enjoy reading about all of the fun events that Zoe is involved in planning - as someone who does event planning for (a part of) her Day Job, it gives me new and fun ideas with every story. And I love Zoe's heart for animals - if I could, I would have a sanctuary or shelter of my own to run. The only problem would be saying goodbye when the animals either found homes or went back into the wild! This story was a quick read that really got me into the Halloween holiday spirit.
review 2: Title: Halloween Hijinks - A Zoe Donovan Mystery Book 1Author: Kathi DaleyPublisher: Kathi DaleyPublished: 9-8-2013ISBN: 10-1492388815ISBN: 13-978-1492388814E-Book ASIN: B00F2X0PJGPages: 180Genre: SuspenseTags: Cozy MysterySensual Level: MildOverall Rating: Very GoodReviewed For: A Prairie Girl ReadsReviewer: DelAnneKathi Daley has envisioned the town of Ashton Falls and neighbors most of us would love to live in. Zoe Donovan at 24 is a dedicated animal control officer she not only rescues domesticated animals and finds homes for them, but also wild ones which she and others rehabilitate to release back into the wild. With common high school pranks over an upcoming game to open the story followed by the body Zoe comes across in the basement of the Halloween Haunted House, the story quickly pulls you into to the Halloween theme. On the up side her old feelings of animosity for Zak Zimmerman is morphing into something more romantic. Zoe will risk everything to find the killer.I have never read Kathi Daley before, but cozy mysteries hold a special place in my heart and as such am more than willing to try a new author in this genre. I am pleased that I was fortunate enough to read her Zoe Donovan series as the characters have depth and personalities you come to love and look forward to hearing more about. The town has enough mischief and such to keep it from being too perfect, but not so criminally active that you take the long way around it to avoid being caught their in case of care trouble. The story at 180 pages is just right to read at one sitting and leave you looking forward to the next. This is the first in a series and has a few moments that seem a bit bogged down as Ms. Daley develops the plots and characters, but these do not detract from the story itself. As a matter of fact as you read more of the stories in the series you will be glad she took the time to do so. As you continue to read the other books in the series you will better understand the characters actions and reactions as well as their inner-relationships. If you want a series that is clean with humorous dialog and is fun to read this is one you need to check out. I am looking forward to enjoying The Trouble With Turkeys next. I hope you will join me in reveling in Kathi Daley's delightful Zoe Donovan series. less
